You might be wondering how to stand out in the niche when there are tons of established bloggers out there.

You might be seeing many bloggers around you who are doing awesome in blogging, but you are still struggling to make your first dollar online.

Blogging has been changed tremendously in the recent years where new bloggers are emerging daily and trying their luck to succeed in online marketing.

But the point is, why few bloggers are creating fortune online and we are still trying hard and seeing no sign of success. We are spending more time than them but still not able to drive traffic on our blog.

When I started my career in 2011, I was totally a newbie.. A newbie who knew nothing.. I started my first blog on WordPress but I was totally unaware about its functionality and its features. But one thing which pushed me forward was my consistency and dedication to do something awesome in blogging. I tried various things to drive more people on my blog and then monetize it properly.

In first years everything was in hit and trial phase, but now things have changed completely.

In this article I am going to talk about few of the things which you as a newbie can take care and make your blog next big brand in very short time.

Note: Here I am not going to give you any magic wand which will do everything in short time. By short time here I mean is you will save your time which you might be wasting doing unnecessary or unwanted things.

#1. Learn keyword research

I know it might be little hard for you, but you will have to learn this if you really want to taste online success. For the first year I didn’t know anything about keyword research and kept on looking various other methods to drive traffic on my blog.

I after many things, finally I thought about giving SEO a try.

I started doing keyword research and found some hidden methods to rank my keywords. With my surprise I was able to drive 173,509 visitors on my 3 months old blog. This little practice gave me confidence to do more keyword research and I started creating successful blogs one after another.

So if you are still not doing keyword research then start doing it now. Keyword research is the very first step to find what people are searching and in which volume they are searching. One right keyword can bring tons of traffic on your blog. If you don’t know how to do this then you can read my niche blogging series where I have shareds few of the best tips related to SEO.

#2. Improve writing

People visit your blog because they want to get something new, something which they can understand easily and implement in their life.

If you fail to deliver your message in simple way then you actually failed to deliver your message.

My schooling was not very good so I always lacked in English. I knew where I was lacking, so I joined some English classes (I am still improving) to improve my English, because here we are going to deliver our message in English only.

If you think then you are lacking somewhere then start honing your skills.

Start reading great blogs like CopyBlogger, Boost Blog Traffic and Men With Pens.

These blogs will help you to understand the psychology of readers and you will be able to serve better content.

#3. Write long posts

Gone are the days when people used to read 300 words article and Google used to rank them high in SERP.

If you are in blogging since 5-6 months then you must have heard that Google keep launching various algorithm updates to make their search algorithm better. They keep making changes in their algorithms to serve best content in the industry to end users.

So writing long posts is the best ways to enjoy safer side and make your blog posts more engaging.

Bounce rate is such a factor which calculate the amount of time a user spent on your blog. Higher the time people spend on your blog, lower the bounce rate. Ideally it must be low. So long article will let them stay on your blog for longer time which will ultimately help your blog to do better in SEO.

#4. Make relations

I don’t know how many times I have said this.

If you are a newbie then I can bet that you are doing one of the biggest mistakes.

What is the mistake?

You are not sharing other people’s content and not appreciating them.

If you are not sharing, you might be questioning, “Why should I share his/her content when on the same time I can share my own and drive visitors on my blog?”

Your question is obvious.

But this blogging industry don’t run with this mindset.

If you are not sharing other people’s content then you are just failing to open more doors of blogging relations.

#5. Management

This is one of the biggest problem we face when we are sitting online.

We want to do everything, because we don’t want to waste even a single second of our life doing nothing to make money online.

So we keep trying various things at the same.

We think about completing an SEO course by a great industry expert but then soon we start reading another blog and then forget what we were actually doing.

This is a very genuine problem and we all have it.

If you are one of those guys then start managing your tasks today.

Personally I use Google docs and Evernote app to manage everything. If I am doing any course then I will put it in my to-do list and after ticking it finished move to next task.

I used to jump from one thing to another but soon I found the problem and started paying attention toward them. Most of my time was getting wasted in trying various things.. But I was not getting results.

So I started using some great management tools and now I know what I am going to do today.

Wrapping up

I personally lacked in all the skills I mentioned above but with time I figured them out and started improving them. If you are one of the newbies who still not able to make money online then it’s for you to start working on the things I mentioned above.

You might be already good in one or two things but mastering them all will give you fruitful results in future and you will take your blog at new heights.

Feel free to ask your questions in comment section so that I can make this article more awesome by adding more value with your awesome comments.

  1. Hi Kulwant, and welcome to Emmanuel’s blog as a guest this time 🙂

Yes indeed, you mentioned the right points that newbies need to take care of. I think the biggest problem is lack of knowledge initially, whether it’s about SEO, keywords, or simple WordPress and blogger problems.

They learn with time but remain impatient as they want to grasp everything so fast, and when they can’t, they give up blogging altogether. Blogging takes time and you need to be patient I think, before you see results.

Learn to build relationship with fellow bloggers, visit other blogs, learn from pro bloggers or even other blogging friends, niche or no niche – everyone teaches you something, isn’t it? If you don’t learn the art of time management, you can get distracted very easily on places like Facebook, Twitter and the other places.

Yes, you have to work on your language skills and there are various sites and blogs you can visit online to get it all done. Good to see long posts mentioned here…lol…I guess I never had issues with that, nor long comments 🙂

Of course, the more you read and write, the better you become – there are just NO short-cuts to success, isn’t it? 🙂

Thanks for sharing these tips…reminds me of your wonderful guest post on my blog too – remember! Have a nice week ahead, both of you 🙂

    1. Thanks for being here and supporting me, Harleena Mam. 🙂

I got the idea to write about this article after seeing too many bloggers struggling out there who are getting nothing in return.

Blogging has converted into such a giant business in recent years that everyone wants to get involve in this either directly or indirectly.

I have observed that most of the bloggers are in the age of 14-24. This is a age where they can explore the world and learn things much faster than others.. But they got trapped in the money making ideas. They start investing their time to look for more methods to make money online.

So without doing any basic practice they start writing on blog by spreading false information.

In the race they forget to make the relations and they keep banging their heads against the walls… and ultimately they come to understand the real truth of blogging after 2-3 years.

So this article is for all those people who are still in the starting days of their blogging career and not getting good results.

Thanks again for being here. 🙂

      1. I can completely relate with your entry here, Kulwant. Some of the bloggers have no idea of the very things they ‘passionately’ blog about. The question often remains: ‘how can you give what you do not have?’

This post of yours is a great eye opener…it is my believe that many a newbie will pick up something positive from here.

        Make the day great!

        Always,
        Terungwa

  3. Hi Kulwant,

You have wrapped some worthy things to follow by beginners.

For beginners to make money online is always the concern but they forget to search about keywords they use in their blog posts.

When I started my blog I was not aware about a single thing about SEO. After few months I came to know about these terms properly.

Newbies need to learn more about SEO.

Making human bonds is always preferred by every famous blogger, entrepreneur and else. Commenting at other blog is an effective way for this.

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Hope you have a great weekend.:)

  9. Hi Kulwant

A warm welcome to you here at Kabenlah’s blog.

This is the amazing feature of the world of blogging we get in touch with each other from more than several places. It means moving online is so easy and we must take its full advantage.

Out of these 5 skills I would mentioned here the benefits of two skills more particularly.

Following the herd instinct many bloggers conclude their post after putting most essential info in it. They forget the fact there is big big difference between a blog post and newspaper article or text book essay.

Here very informal way of communicating small info with lengthy but equally interesting narration is the unique selling point. If we put in excel sheet from the post of an A-list blogger hardly we get one or two points with quite new info while the rest are old and often mentioned.

This is the art of blogging you communicate without letting the receivers know you are educating or informing him.

Second point is making contacts with other bloggers. Here again newbie bloggers just wait prompt return and expect a reshare for reshare. If they promote others without expecting any return they will surely be noted by several other bloggers. They will note the supporting spirit and will get big return of this quality.

Thanks a lot for sharing this wonderful post of huge value.

    1. Happy to see you, Mi.

Yes, blogging has made this world so small that we keep meeting with each other on various blogs.

I agree with your point here, because I have also seen many newbies following the herd and getting nothing in return. They just keep writing normal articles and expect huge results.. But they never thought about learning the tips to make their writing more convincing.

Making relations with other bloggers is one of the awesome and must to do things because bloggers can help you in many ways.

I loved your comment and thoughts.

      Thanks for being here. 🙂

  10. Hello kulwant sir,

This is a great post for all bloggers, but especially for Newbie Bloggers like me 🙂

I just love this post and would like to read it every single day
To be successful in blogging, the goal is to write great content.Writing is one of my most dreaded tasks.

When you have a clear idea of what you are writing, it is much easier to write.

But what is more difficult is letting the world know that you’ve just written a new post!

I always read your post and I’m glad that today I’m reading your post on Emmanuel’s blog.

Thank you Kulwant sir for keeping it simple and objective.

    1. Hi Minakshi.

Yes, I wrote this article keeping newbies in my mind.

Being successful in blogging is easy if you know the right approach.

Your comment has inspired me to write more awesome stuff in future.

Thanks a lot for this awesome comment.

  11. Hey Kulwant Nagi,
You just made a awesome gift for the newbie bloggers. 5 point of skill you mentioned are must for any blogger in order to get success in blogging platform. I want to add another skill along with your 5 which is having knowledge of natural link building.

Thanks a lot for your wonderful work.
    -MSI Sakib

    1. Hi MSI Sakib.

Yeah, having knowledge to make natural links is also one of the most crucial things to learn. This skill can help them to boost their search engine ranking and ultimately more traffic on their blogs.

Thanks for adding value in the article.

  12. Hello Kulwant,

Great points that you mentioned there.

I dont write for the search engines & i dont rely on the search engines for my traffic. No keyword research either.

Not many people use a blog the way i do.

The main purpose of my blog is not to gain visitors from the search engines, it is to communicate with the people that follow me, whether this be social media followers, or those on my email list.

Rather than writing a search engine optimized article, i simply write whats on my mind that can help others. Something that sparks inspiration. A mistake i made in the past that my readers can avoid. That is my main aim.

My blog is a secondary tool, my email list is the main focus as its easier to build.

The same goes for my comments, i dont do this to increase the rank of my blog, i do this as i enjoy communicating with like-minded people who take action.(#4. Make relations)

I know people may think this is controversial, but if im like everyone else, then i would not be me.

I can however, relate to points #4 and #5.

    All the best.

    1. Aden, happy to hear that your blogging style is different than others.

In your case the definition is blogging is different than us as your main aim to convey your ideas and communicate with people.

In your method people enjoy more because they got articles directly from the heart of writer which ultimately make them feel more awesome.

I am feeling very happy to find a person way different than other bloggers.

      Best wishes..

  13. Hi Kulwant,

    Great post for newbies.

#2, 3, & 4 are all great tips. Especially #4 because as a new blogger, you have the opinion of thinking that you can do everything by yourself since it’s your blog. But it’s very hard to succeed in blogging without any help. You have to build relationships and engage with other bloggers and even your readers that leave comments.

As for writing longer posts … anyone who’s been to my blog lately knows that’s what I’m about. I never been a fan of 300 word blog posts anyway so that wasn’t a problem for me.

    Great post here.

    – Andrew

    1. Yes, Andrew… In blogging we need someone who can show us path and help us to do right things in blogging.

When I started blogging 3 years back, I used to write 250-300 words articles, as for me it was a boundary and I could not write more than 300 words.

But once I spent few months in blogging I found it easier to write 1000-1500 words articles as well.. Now I am going to increase the number count to 1500+ words in my next blog posts..

      Thanks for being here. 🙂

  14. We all have different stories to share regarding how we started blogging and what problems we faced in the beginning. You shared some important factors to be taken care of.

    Keywords Planning
I would say this factor is inluencial when you are writing long posts. Doing keywords research when you are going to write content of only 300-400 words is not really necessary.

    Management
Yes, this is really a very big problem. We all are guilty of miss-management because we are so excited when we step into blogging that we forget about managing our time & effort. You can use Google Timer too, for setting time for any kind of task.

    Connections
Yes, they are very important to let people know about your existence. Otherwise, Internet is too wide for you to be known in it.

    Long Posts
They are good not only for reducing bounce rate, but also for targetting more keywords and performing better SEO wise.

Thanks for sharing your tips. I hope they help newbies in their blogging career.

  15. Hello Kulwant,

Everyone starts as a newbie someday well past – even the very big names!

In all you do today, make certain that the day ends up on a great note.

    Always,
    Terungwa

    1. Yes Akaahan Terungwa, every expert was a newbie one day.

Willingness to learn in this filed can make you a big player in just few years. So all you need to do is decide what you actually want to do.

  16. Hi Kulwant,

Newbies needs to learn many things in order to survive in blogosphere and to achieve the success which would benefits them for longer period in their life.

Focusing on some simple thing will let them stand out of the crowd.
    Thanks for sharing. 🙂

  17. Learn keyword research – one of the fundamentals newbies should learn to boost success rate. Keywords helps your posts/article be visible on search results if someone will search that certain word or keyword. You need to learn how to use it in an effective write up with a value.

Improving your writing includes how to correctly use the keyword/s, the grammar, the voice, the humor and the pitch.

The rest of the numbers must be implemented. Learning these strategies will keep you as a newbie on the track and continue improving your skills.
I found this post shared on Kingged.com, the Internet marketing social networking site, and I “kingged” it and left this comment.

This means the tips you shared aren’t fro newbies alone. However if a newcomer get to know these clues at the start, it will accelerate the success rate.

  20. Hi Kulwant,

This is a great article for newbies such as myself. I recently started looking into keywords searching and I think I going to start a entirely new blog based on certain keywords, but I still have to organize how I want the blog to be and what I want it to be about. I agree that many bloggers should pay attention to their content and write better, but that will come from practice and writing everyday. Management is also a big one, because in a world full of distractions, it is easy to get thrown off course. Thanks for sharing this information!

    Regards,
    Lawrence
